Pug at the bar - update

The pug at the bar has been busy, too busy to attend the last Bent Arms 'cook-off'.  Worse: we had such a good time at the bar that we can't remember the details of what happened... something about Ursula coming last and picking 'Pork Pies' as the next 'cook-off' for Sunday 22nd February at 3pm... There is a poster with the details at the bar of the Bent and you can work your magic at home and bring the efforts in to the Bent for the competition. Hungry hangers on get to eat whatever is left after the Judges have finished – same rules – check previous posts.

Two dodgy doggies were spotted secretly disposing of stolen goods on the Common in broad daylight. 'i-spy' have released the following photo and warned those with tasty tit-bits to beware.

Apparently, Monty Sunshine defected to Cuckfield for the day and discovered 'Waggy Tails' in the Saturday market next to the revamped dog-friendly 'Talbot Inn'. It was the tasty treats that first attracted the attention, followed by the designer dog collars. The lovely Trudy Furini and her little White Westie promised to join the little dog club on Lindfield Common when the weather gets better, so check out her out at www.trudyfuriniphotography.co.uk  and visit her stall on the next Cuckfield market day.

The Pug would like eveyone to know:

Katy and Monty's puppies have all gone to their new homes – apart from little Nipper who is staying with mum and is apparently a regular in local Lindfield pubs. Cute photos follow – everybody get ready to say ahhhhhhhhhhhhh.....

The Pug at the bar (2)

The Pug at the bar is fatter than the last report as he was requisitioned as an Apple Pie Judge on the last 'Bent Arms bake off'. “Life is tough for some” and stuffed with apple pie entries the Pug had to cast votes to criteria set by the excellent Bent Chef.

Competition was clearly tough as the Winner, David, claimed to have based his dish on an an internet recipe and cooked his first attempt at making an Apple pie the morning of the competition. Second Place entry, Ursula, complained that, “the pastry took him hours and I couldn't get in the kitchen”.

Once again, all potential chefs and others who just fancy their cooking skills should nose on over to 'The Bent Arms' on Lindfield High Street  for the 4pm 'Cook Off ' on the last Sunday of every month. Contestants are asked to make one dish at home and bring it in – so your secrets are safe as long as you don't wander the bar telling everyone.

The next contest  - Sunday 30/11/2014

: 'make a savoury dish of your choice that involves dumplings'.

– A challenge picked by Jo - whose oven was not really big enough to accommodate an  Apple pie (but she did try).

Come in out of the rain and join us in the warm.
Bring your dog, taste the entries or enter your own dish.

FREE to enter  ~  FREE to taste

                                                                 Win the Trophy!

Get your name on 'The Bent Rolling Pin'

                                                                          or

as last place pick the next 'Cook Off'' dish...

So,  keep warm and dry, nibble free nosh with new friends and

come join us in the Bent on Sunday.

“I prefer it to getting married”

said George Clooney look-a-like sitting on his own in the corner.

The Bent Arms is a dog friendly pub, but “dogs are not allowed in the restaurant”,
which is precisely where they want to go. . .

the Pug at the bar

The Pug at the bar is looking for potential chefs. All those who fancy their cooking should nose on over to 'The Bent Arms' on Lindfield High Street for the 4pm 'Cook Off' on the last Sunday of every month.
Contestants are asked to make one dish – this will be pinned up at the bar one week in advanced and entry is FREE. Win the Trophy! Get your name on 'the Bent rolling pin' – and whoever comes last gets to pick the next 'Cook Off'' dish... (which for those with a twisted sense of humour, is the best prize of all).
Spectators get to try the dishes free of charge after the judges have finished – so if you like nibbling nosh in a warm bar on a wet Sunday afternoon, then this is the place for you.
Last month contestants made a Chocolate Roule with Raspberry comfit – and just to try and confuse the Judges a shop bought version was sneaked in (it came last):
Winners: 1st Jerry, 2nd Ursula, 3rd David.
The Bent Arms is a dog friendly pub, but “dogs are not allowed in the restaurant”, which is precisely where they want to go. . .
So, sod the sunshine, come join us in the Bent on Sunday.

I prefer it to 'Downton Abbey' ”
 - said  George Clooney  look-a-like sitting on his own in the corner.

On the sniff

Dogs do speak, but only to those who know how to listen.

Orhan Pamuk

People can learn a lot from dogs, and at the '5 to 7 dog club' those well socialised puppies create a happy pack. Within this group there is no one pack leader, it fluctuates and changes moment to moment and it would be difficult to know which dog could play that role. Apparently, this is the way of things and ‘a long time ago' dogs did try to hold an ‘election’, to try to elect a dog to be their 'Leader', but it never worked out :
I nominate the Bulldog as our Leader. He’s strong. He can fight,” said one scraggy little Terrier.
But he can’t run,” said another dog. “what good is a fighter who can’t run? He won’t catch anybody.”
Then another dog got up and said: “I nominate the Greyhound, because he sure can run.”
But the other dogs cried: “Nawwww! He can run all right, but he can’t fight. When he catches up with someone, what happens then? He gets the hell beaten out of him, that’s what! So all he’s good for is running away.
Then one very ugly little mutt jumped up and shouted: “I nominate that dog as Leader that smells good under his tail..!
And immediately an equally ugly mutt jumped up and yelped: “I second that motion.
At once all the dogs started sniffing underneath each other’s tails and a big chorus went up:

Phew! He doesn’t smell good under his tail.”
No, no, no... neither does this one.
This one sure ain’t no Leader material.
No, this one is no good either!
Pongo! This isn’t the people choice...
Wow! this sure ain’t my candidate!

When you go out for a walk, just watch the dogs. They’re still sniffing under each other’s tails. They are looking for a good Leader, they’ve been looking since the start of time and they still haven’t found one.

The '5 to 7 dog club' is free to join and meets between 5 and 7pm on Lindfield Common most evenings – weather permitting. Please bring a dog, an acceptance of all within the group and a sense of humour.
